What this course covers
Most safeguarding concerns in youth organisations do not begin with an obvious act. They begin with a boundary that moved. This course covers what a position of trust means and why it changes what is acceptable; the boundary behaviours that create risk, including online and after a project ends; gifts, favouritism and physical contact; and how a code of conduct applies to situations that are not clear-cut. It closes with how to raise a concern about a colleague, and what an organisation has to do to make that possible.
Who this course is for
Everyone, and particularly anyone in a mentoring, training or supervisory role. Recommended for board members alongside Course 3.
By the end of this course
you will be able to
Explain what a position of trust is, and why it changes the rules for the person holding it
Identify boundary behaviours that create risk, including in online contact
Apply a code of conduct to situations that are not clear-cut
Recognise power imbalances in youth work and take steps to reduce them
Describe how to raise a concern about a colleague, and what protection exists for doing so
Identify what an organisation must do to make speaking up possible
