What this course covers
Most safeguarding failures happen in the first five minutes. This course covers what to do when someone tells you something: how to listen, what to say, what you must never promise, and why you do not ask questions to find out more. It distinguishes a concern from a disclosure and from a complaint, sets out the four channels through which concerns should reach your safeguarding lead, and shows how to record what you were told accurately and in the person’s own words.
Who this course is for
Everyone who works or volunteers with participants. Together with Course 1, this is the minimum before anyone has contact with young people.
By the end of this course
you will be able to
Distinguish between a concern, a disclosure and a complaint
Respond appropriately in the first five minutes of a disclosure
Explain why confidentiality can never be promised, and use the words that replace that promise
Record a concern factually, promptly and in the person’s own words
Identify the four reporting channels your organisation should have in place
Report a concern within the required timescale
